Commitment to Sustainability

Commitment to Sustainability

Driven by the Third Pillar of the Selangor First Plan (Rancangan Selangor Pertama), Selangor is at the forefront of sustainable tourism development. A standout example is the Gombak-Hulu Langat Geopark (GHLGp), a flagship ecotourism initiative. Renowned for its geological significance within an urban landscape, the GHLGp is pivotal in preserving both geology and biodiversity while protecting the state’s natural heritage. Beyond environmental protection, it serves as a vehicle for community involvement by empowering local champions as tour guides, fostering a sense of pride, ownership and responsibility within the community. As the first national geopark in Selangor, encompassing 20 geosites in Gombak and Hulu Langat, the GHLGp aspires to achieve UNESCO Global Geopark recognition by 2028.

In addition to its environmental efforts, Selangor’s focus on community-based tourism continues to flourish. Since 2018, the state has appointed 51 Selangor Community Hosts which aims to elevate local experiences by offering tourists authentic cultural and experiential tourism. These hosts act as ambassadors of their communities, sharing their rich knowledge of local customs, food, history and local attractions. With plans to expand this initiative, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, supported by Tourism Selangor, will empower more individuals through professional training and Red Batch certification, establishing a new standard for quality and professionalism in Selangor Community Hosts services.

Agrotourism and Beyond

Agrotourism and Beyond

The State of Selangor’s collaboration with the agriculture industry is another testament to its dedication to sustainability. Agrotourism, a growing segment in the state, benefits both the environment and the local economy by promoting responsible farming practices and fostering community-driven experiences. Selangor’s commitment to this segment aligns with the state’s broader push for green practices and smart farming which are becoming increasingly popular among visitors.

With key tourism sectors like ecotourism, agrotourism, gastronomy, medical tourism and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) forming the core of Selangor’s tourism strategy, the state is well-positioned to offer diverse, immersive experiences that cater to various traveler segments.
