I was mesmerized by the Maridenim Collection and Marimekko 60 Years Anniversary Collection during the fashion show at the boutique in Suria KLCC recently.

Marimekko was born in Finland by a textile company renowned for its bold, colorful prints and minimalist designs; founded in 1951 by Viljo and Armi Ratia in Helsinki. For Pre-Fall 2024, Finnish design house Marimekko explores the relationship between organic patterns and the urban architectural landscape. 

 

The collection plays with geometric elements that bring rhythm to the abstract and organic mood of the season. Featuring new conceptual expressions of the iconic 60-year-old Unikko print, the collection introduces new laser-cut woolen styles and bold dresses with entirely new placement of the iconic print. 

 

The dress silhouettes of the season include both shorter and longer lengths, perfect to be paired with a pair of jeans of bomber jacket for a cool and casual look.

Marimekko Maridenim

For Pre-Fall 2024, Marimekko presents its first denim collection, first revealed during Copenhagen Fashion Week in February 2024. A new canvas for creativity. Maridenim is a collection of classic denim pieces that meet the bold prints and colors of Marimekko. For anybody, any moment and any pattern.

Marimekko’s high-quality denim comes in three fits: straight, wide, and barrel leg, and includes two full looks with the beloved Unikko print. Marimekko Maridenim was designed by following The Jeans Redesign guidelines by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, which are made publicly available for the fashion industry to use. 

 

Based on the principles of a circular economy, The Jeans Redesign guidelines were developed with input from 80 experts across industry, academia, and NGOs to encourage leading brands, mills, and manufacturers to transform the way jeans are designed and made so that they are used more, made to be made again, and crafted from safe and recycled or renewable inputs.

 

The Marimekko Maridenim collection follows The Jeans Redesign guidelines by working with monomaterial cotton with no stretch, of which 80 percent is organic cotton and 20 percent recycled cotton. Marimekko Maridenim is made with minimal use of hardware, including the use of removable buttons and no rivets. 

The hardware is not finished with electroplating, as per the recommendations by The Jeans Redesign guidelines. Both the wash, finish and chemical use of the garments follow the guidelines, including abstaining from stone washing or the use of Potassium permanganate.

Seasonal prints & colors

The new season at Marimekko starts with calming shades of sage, lemon and rosy reds, which reflect the laid-back mood of the late summer. As the season progresses towards the beginning of Fall, the mood shifts from soft hues to bright red, cobalt blue and burnt orange. 

The bold colors are combined with pure white and shades of grey, which reflect the architectural theme of the collection and provide depth to the otherwise bright mood of the season.

Marimekko features a selection of rhythmic patterns from its archive, including Lanketti by Annika Rimala and Lokki by Maija Isola. The iconic Unikko print is seen in a new conceptual, almost wave-like placement in the season’s hero dresses. 

 

The bold and expressive Unikko print meets joyous Suvi by Fujiwo Ishimoto, which brings all the flowers of the field together in celebration of Unikko. One of the season’s hero prints is Lammet by Katsuji Wakisaka, which ties the rhythmic and floral prints together.

 

In Marimekko’s Pre-Fall 2024 collection, 71 percent of all materials are either organic or recycled, 79 percent of all cotton in the collection is organic, and 34 percent of all wool is recycled.
