Nation’s Biggest Peranakan Lanterns By Himalaya Sports Lights Up Jonker Walk This CNY

Hey! It’s my family tradition that every CNY we will plan for a short family trip. Himalaya Sports makes it into Malaysia Book of Records with its stunning 12-feet high Peranakan lanterns!

 

Standing tall at 12-feet high and 8-feet wide, the pair of lanterns is acknowledged by the Malaysia Book of Records as the “Biggest Peranakan Lanterns” and the sugar confectionary company was awarded the recognition at the official launch of the lanterns recently, which was witnessed by the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Dato Sri Tiong King Sing, and Melaka Jonker Walk Committee Chairman, Datuk Wira Gan Tian Loo.

Traditionally made from bamboo which symbolizes strength and virtue, the Peranakan Chinese lanterns are hung at the entrance of homes during joyful occasions and days of ancestral prayers. It is also called surname lantern because the family name and clan are prominently painted on them in addition to vibrant drawings symbolizing aspects of Chinese culture and is often passed down through generations.

This is the third year Himalaya Sports returns as sponsor of Jonker Walk arches and 800 lanterns. The bright red lanterns will illuminate Jonker Walk which will be bustling with local and international tourists taking advantage to soak in the vibrant atmosphere during the holiday.
