Let’s all be responsible individuals that will allow children to be the best versions of themselves. Be supportive, encouraging, and be a catalyst where they’re able to learn important lifelong skills that will benefit them in the future. Create an environment where they feel safe and needed! Sometimes, all a child need is a person who believes in them. Be that person! Education breeds confidence. Confidence breeds hope. Hope breeds peace. I was so inspired by the thoughtful sharing session with Ms Evanna Devi from SK Bandar Utama Damansara 2.

Well, few days ago, I managed to have a quick chat with Ms Evanna over the phone, most of her students call her Ms. Eva. She teaches English and also a rugby coach in SK Bandar Utama Damansara 2. This year marks her 7th year of teaching; she is passionate and take responsibility seriously.

Initially Ms. Eva decided
to become a teacher because her mother wanted one of her kids to be a teacher
and so, she chose to do it for her. Along the way, especially during her undergrad
studies, she learned to love teaching, and because she has so much passion in
seeing kids develop, progress, and grow, she decided to stick around and see if
this was what I wanted and I guess, being a teacher is what she was destined to
be.

“I have never been
happier to wake up at 530am every day just to go to school and meet my kids in
school. The fact that my kids are my biggest hope on the worst days of my life,
that has truly inspired me to be teacher. And on top of that, I just want to be
the teacher I never had.” said M. Eva.

When asked about the
challenges that she and her students faced during the MCO period; Ms. Eva believes
that having that teacher student rapport is the most important part of
teaching. During the online lectures, it’s hard to keep students engaged
without a teacher’s physical presence and face-to-face contact. With MCO and
online learning, it was really hard to create that bond because all we were
bounded by the laptop screen. She could not give her kids a fist bump or a high
five when they do well (only virtually) but she can’t identify their emotions
or mood as the teaching and learning takes place.

Not every student has
a personal gadget to use for online learning. Many of them are supposed to
share the laptops and computers with their parents, sisters/ brothers to stay
on track. Most of the time, they get side-tracked because they can’t attend
lessons and this is an issue and challenge because learning is their rights and
not having access to it, is sad.

Another challenge would be to bridge the gap between sports training, and students motivation to attend classes. Most of her student athletes, especially my rugby boys and girls are highly motivated to go to school, knowing that there is sports and rugby training. With MCO, their motivation to attend school was low. This issue was resolved by providing them online trainings and sharing rugby videos but as a teacher who is equally as active, she knew those were insufficient.
Ms. Eva wish that all
her students (kids) will always strive for progress and believe that their
potential is limitless. Remember that it is okay to stumble and fall and even
break a few bones along the way to reach your destination. All those setbacks
will eventually make you stronger.
