Tulum is a very safe place but as in any other destination, you need to take precautions and be aware of your belongings. Tulum doesn't have an airport, so to reach the city you'll have to first get to the Cancun Airport and then take some Cancun Shuttle options. From the airport, you can take an ADO bus outside the terminals or a taxi to Tulum.

This travel guide is filled with some tips to help you plan your trip to Tulum.

What to do in Tulum?

Tulum is a relatively small town, so mobility doesn’t have to be a problem for you. You can walk, rent a bicycle or get any of the different transfer options. The city is divided into three main areas, the town, the beach, and the ruins.

Once in town, you can find several spas, hotels, shops, restaurants, and bars to enjoy the perfect atmosphere. Yoga is very popular in Tulum, that’s why you can find several venues offering yoga classes, especially at the beach and among the treetops of the forest. If you are looking for a place to relax, Tulum offers great treatments and massages available in most hotels.

The Caribbean beach is also one of the most beautiful places for those looking to relax. With white sand and some restaurants to enjoy a great dinner. Beaches are perfect to practice different water activities such as snorkeling or scuba diving.

Whether you are planning to get a snorkel tour to explore the wildlife areas or do it by yourself. There are some perfect diving sites just off the coast with great natural sights to see while you dive. Cenotes are also another great option to swim or snorkel. Some of the main freshwater pools are Gran Cenote, Dos Ojos, and Jardin de Eden.

The Tulum ruins are a must-to-do during your visit. Those are located a short distance from town and you can reach them by taking a taxi or renting a bicycle. There are also some Cancun to Tulum Shuttle to go directly from the airport and special tours. Explore the buildings and all the architectonic details to know more about the Mayan culture and history. Some ruins allow access and the possibility to climb them so do not hesitate and enjoy the incredible views.

Sian Ka’an is another important attraction in Tulum. It is the largest protected area in the Mexican Caribbean and UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.
