First dates are literally your make it or break it moment. First impressions are everything, and a date is certainly no exception. Play things wrong, and you could blow your chance at love during your interaction. However, play your cards right, and you might just have found Mr. or Mrs. Right. Take a look at some of the most important mistakes to avoid when going on a first date with someone.
Neglecting Their Appearance
A lot of people may think they're trying too hard if they put on a suit or a dress before their first date. However, you can end up shooting yourself in the foot if you don't make an effort on the way that you look. Put on a nice outfit that highlights your best features. Showing up in something you threw together at the last minute might send the wrong signals to your date.
If you really like them, the last thing you want them thinking is that you don't care what you look like. It's flattering to know that the person you're on a date with put effort into the way that they look just for you. Before you walk out the door, make sure you're proud of what you've put together.
Being Negative
A lot of people get nervous on first dates, and as a result, they start chattering about things they might not normally talk about. It's easy to find yourself complaining and being negative if you let your nerves take over. Avoid talking about anything that makes you come across as someone negative. Excessive complaining is just plain rude and unenjoyable. Try to find nice things to say rather than only negative things, and above all, make sure that you compliment your date.
Looking at Your Phone
Glancing at your phone every now and then is one thing; however, being glued to your phone for an entire first date is incredibly rude. Show the person you're with enough respect to be present. If you're not enjoying yourself, simply ask to be excused. There's no point in wasting someone's time by making them sit around while you have your nose in your phone.
Showing Up Late
You wouldn't show up
to your first day of work late, so why on earth would you show up to a first
date late? If you do show up late, make sure that you're overly apologetic and
make up for it by offering them a drink or paying for their dinner. Above all, let
your date know ahead of time if you are running late because of traffic or
other unforeseen circumstances. One of the worst things you can do is leave
someone hanging without letting them know you're running behind.
