3 Tips For Making More Sustainable Fashion Choices

While many people might think about what they’re able to recycle or compost on a regular basis when they think about living a sustainable life, the clothes that you choose to buy and wear can also play a large role in the size of carbon footprint you leave and contribute to. Knowing this, it’s wise to find ways to leave as little trace as possible with the attire you wear.

To help you in doing so, here are three tips for making more sustainable fashion choices.

Choose Organic Cotton

Many of the clothes and other cloth items that you have, use, or wear are likely made out of cotton. However, not all cotton is created equal.

According to Emma Spedding, a contributor to WhoWhatWear.com, you should try to always choose items that are made with organic or GOTS cotton. What this means is that the cotton has grown, farmed, processed, and created all in a sustainable way throughout the entire supply chain. As a result, organic cotton is going to be a much more sustainable choice than any other form of cotton. So before you buy a cotton piece of clothing, make sure to check and see if it’s organic or not prior to making your purchase.

Mend Clothes Rather Than Discarding Them

There’s a huge amount of clothes that are discarded each day simply because they either don’t fit right anymore or have become slightly worn in one way or another.

If this happens to an article of your clothing, rather than discarding it, Georgia Murray, a contributor to Refinery29.com, recommends that you find a way to mend it. Even if you don’t know how to sew or aren’t very crafty, you can still find ways to fix basic things with most pieces of clothing. And, if you’re needing some major alterations done, it’s much more sustainable to work with a tailor rather than throwing away this item and buying a new one.

Buy Quality Products

One of the reasons why people buy so much clothing that doesn’t get worn for too long is because they’re spending their money on low-quality clothes.

While this might seem like a smart financial choice at the moment, you’ll soon find that not only is this bad for your bank account, but it’s also bad for the environment. Rather than going this route, Amy De Klerk, a contributor to Harper’s Bazaar, advises that you save up your money and invest it in quality pieces of clothing that will last you for years to come. Then, you’re not creating the need for more clothes to be made and you’re saving money from having to constantly be buying new clothes.

If you’re looking to make more sustainable choices with your wardrobe, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you achieve this goal.
