How to Disable AdBlock on Internet Explorer

A common frustration among internet users is the presence of advertisements on web pages. Some pages display a minimal amount of ad content, while others include a great deal. The combination of banners, pop-ups, and auto-playing videos can become intrusive and overwhelming. More importantly, it slows the loading of the page, even with a high-speed connection. This has led to the popularity of ad-blocking browser extensions, including AdBlock and AdBlock Plus. These browser extensions filter out the advertising and let the user get to the content they want faster.

Blocking the AdBlock in Internet Explorer

Advertising means revenue for commercial websites. To combat the use of ad-blocking extensions, some sites have added code that prevents users from viewing the content of those pages while AdBlock is active. In such cases, the user must disable AdBlock if they want to view the page. With Microsoft's Internet Explorer, now known as Edge, disabling AdBlock is a simple process. 

Site-Specific Disabling

To disable AdBlock for a particular page or site, navigate to that site and move your cursor to the browser's top right corner. Click on the red stop sign icon for the AdBlock extension. This opens a pop-up menu for the program. Look for the option to disable AdBlock on that site and click it. The red icon at the top will turn gray. Click refresh to reload the page if it does not do so automatically. Your browser will remember this setting for future visits to that site, even when AdBlock is otherwise enabled. 

Disabling For All Sites

To disable AdBlock for all sites visited, follow these few steps: 

• Move your cursor to the top right corner of Explorer or Edge (to the three horizontal dots for the Settings and More menu) and click to open.       

• Scroll down to the word Extensions and click again. On the following page, look for AdBlock in the area below the Installed Extensions header.      

• Click on the on/off slide lever button in the AdBlock box to disable the extension. The button will turn gray when in the 'off' position.    

• Close the Extensions menu tab and reload the page if necessary.  

Enabling/Disabling JavaScript

JavaScript is a web-development programming language used in browsers like Microsoft Explorer and Edge to process the source code into the various page elements. JavaScript is also how extensions like AdBlock know which elements to block when loading the page. You can view JavaScript in Explorer and Edge by right-clicking on a blank spot on a web page and clicking "Inspect" on the ensuing pop-up menu. If you find that you need to enable JavaScript manually, take the following steps: 

• Move your cursor to the three-dot button at the top right corner of the browser and click it.        

• Scroll down to click on Settings and then click Site Permissions in the left-hand menu of the Settings page.

• Look for the JavaScript setting. If it does not say Allowed, click on the arrow to the right to open that setting. Then, click the on/off button to the "on" setting to enable JavaScript, and close the tab for the Settings page.  

Ads are a necessary component of the modern-day browsing experience. They're simply a part of our everyday life. While many people prefer to avoid them wherever possible, others may appreciate their presence or accept them as the cost of visiting certain sites. At first, the act of enabling and disabling AdBlock might feel like a hassle, but once you know how to manage those settings, it will make for a smoother, faster experience navigating the web.
