How often have you heard someone exclaim that something “stinks like a wet dog”? Our dogs get blamed for so many bad odors, but there is no reason why our pets should smell bad. Of course, there are going to be times when any dog or cat is not going to smell their best. We can’t all give off the fragrance of roses all the time. But, let’s face it, it happens and when it does it’s important to remove the stench.

Most of the time our pets smell nice and fresh. Indeed, their fur smells sweet. It’s a distinct smell. However, their smell is not always pleasant. There are times when it can become rather pungent.

Unfortunately, untackled it can end up with the whole house smelling like a dirty dog. None of us likes to return home to somewhere that stinks of canine, or cat urine.

The roots of bad pet smells are many and varied. Female dogs when they are on heat often release pheromones to attract other dogs. Some dogs can also secrete oils that protect their skin and fur keeping them healthy. These oils can have a unique scent.  

It’s strong and musky odor and can be linked to an animal’s anal sacs and scent glands, which give off what can be described as a yeasty smell.

Like exercising humans, dogs also sweat. It doesn’t drip as ours can but it still has an odor to it. Dogs have been known to track their smells through the house just by walking about or worse by rolling on the floors and carpets. Dog sweat also leaves an unpleasant odor on their beds, but with Lucky Paws products, this isn't a problem.

Other causes of pet odors can be linked to skin issues, bacteria, ear infections, and dental problems. The associated bacteria and fungi may create a bad odor. If you fear this is the cause of the bad smell, it’s time to consult your vet. You may even want to plan a visit.

Whatever, if your beloved pet - cat or dog – is stinking up your house you need to act. Pet odors have a horrible habit of lingering and reeking worse than your sweaty gym socks.

There are some easy ways to eliminate the most offensive smells.

Michelle Schenker, who founded the respected CanineJournal.com, says there is the best pet odor eliminator. She believes that wet and dry dog urine are two very different beasts. Each requires a different removal technique. The method also works for cat pee. It is approved by the Humane Society.

What you do is put paper towels on top of the urine to soak it up. You then cover these paper towels with another clean towel.

If a rug has been affected, put a towel below the urine spot too. Whatever, you need to press firmly into the affected area with some old rag or anything else that is absorbent but you don't mind ruining.  The aim is to absorb as much of the liquid as possible.

When the towels become soaked, carry on, and repeat the process. When the urine has been soaked up, apply cold water to the area and again mop this up with more towels or a wet vac.

Finally, when the affected area has dried, get out the vacuum. Sprinkle on a little baking soda and let this work on the area for between 15 and 20 minutes. This will create added freshness.
