IFEC 2019: International Footwear Entrepreneurs’ Conference in Malaysia

Hey! do you want to know the ways how to navigate challenges in the footwear industry and latest alternate materials in footwear production? Well, I was privileged to attend the inaugural International Footwear Entrepreneurs’ Conference 2019 that was held at the Pacific Regency Hotel in Kuala Lumpur on 29th to 30th April, 2019. During the two days conference not only we learnt so many things through the presentations and case studies but also discovered the new Ecocare Sneakers and the first bio-resin technology in Malaysia from University Malaysia Kelantan.

This conference provides a platform for footwear professionals to network and mingle with buyers, sellers, researchers, and solution providers. Besides, learning the delegates, speakers and sponsors had the opportunity to network during the networking breaks participate in one-to-one business meetings. Due to the intimacy of the event, there were a lot of engaging discussions that were held which led to the formation of partnerships and business deals.

The event started off with an opening address by Mr Ricky Kok, Co-Founder of IFEC Malaysia. Ricky intends to build IFEC to be the leading footwear conference in the region.  IFEC was born due to his love for the footwear industry. After being in conferences, he felt that the region needed a platform for footwear professionals to share thoughts, exchange ideas and opinions on the latest developments in the footwear industry.

The presentations started with Landmark Group on bridging the gap between generations X, Y and Z to maintain business competitiveness by Mr Suvathi Datta, SEA Business Head. They also shared on “smart shoes” which champions innovation to stay relevant and competitive in the marketplace.

Then followed by the ASEAN Retail-Chain Franchise Federation (ARFF) which comprised of the 9 major trends to watch out for in Asian retail and the importance of reaping benefits from e-commerce and m-commerce in supporting the new era of consumerism by Mr Benjamin Ee, VP ARFF.

After that we have a chance to learn about techniques to increase web traffic and revenue, a highly technical session presented by Mr Aziz Malek, Co-Founder Webmedic. It helps brands understand better when designing and creating content for their online platforms. The first bio resin made in Malaysia from University Malaysia Kelantan (UMK)

Then we had an interesting meet-up with Dr Naim from University Malaysia Kelantan (UMK), official partner of IFEC. He also introduced the first bio resin made in Malaysia produced using old oil palm trunk and turn it into plastic resin (bio resin) and make it for daily use plastic products.

According to him, most of the bio resin (biodegrabable resin) in Malaysia are imported and made from starch, corn or sugar cane which is food-based plant. Currently, UMK is looking for investor and partners to collaborate in this bio resin technology to turn into the daily plastic products. Those interested can contact +6011 1075 4648.

Last but not least, was the soft launch of Chinese brand, Ecocare Sneakers by Mr Francis Tsang. Ecocare Sneakers is sustainable fashionable sneakers using halal certified leather. They are the first sneaker brand to use halal leather, and non-toxic leather which is very good for sensitive skin and even for an infant. The vibram rubber sole is worldwide famous technology from Ecocare, plus Ortholite insole, premium quality insole that's more comfortable and it ease the backaches.

The material of the insole is made from 90% recycled materials. Most of the materials and designs are sustainable such as no metal eyelet, reusable shoelace, reusable charcoal bags are given instead of traditional silica gel which is toxic, a canvas bag is given with each pair of shoes instead of a shoe box, no extra paper packaging as this is a waste, and embroideries are done by Yunan jobless women. Overall the International Footwear Entrepreneurs’ Conference provides a very insightful knowledge, new innovations, trends, and materials in footwear industry. Day two saw a higher number of attendees and had 7 sessions.
