8 Tips In Finding
Your Own Personal Style
Whether we like it or
not, we know that looks matter. A lot of people judge based on looks and
although looks can only get you so far, it allows you to put your foot in the
door when it comes to meeting people.
8 Tips In Finding Your Own Personal Style |
Part of your
appearance is your style. Style refers to the way you look, the way you dress,
even the haircut and makeup of your choice. There is no one style that fits
everybody even if there are staple items in every man or woman's closet.
Developing your own style helps you carry yourself with confidence and this
helps a lot in fostering meaningful relationships in your social and business
circles.
There are many ways
to find out your personal style if you don't know yet. Here are 8 tips that can
help you know which style best suits you:
1. Know what you want
The first step in
knowing your personal style is identifying the things you like and don't like.
Although sometimes, what you think you like isn't exactly the best choice for
you, you can at least rule out the types of clothes that you are sure you will not
appreciate or want to wear. In this way, you can narrow down your choices and
you wouldn't be shocked at the many clothing types you can choose from.
2. Get inspiration
Getting inspiration
is one way of knowing the kinds of clothes you want. You can pick a celebrity
and look at their clothing choices, or compile pictures of clothes that
interest you. You can make a board for this so you can see the clothes you are
interested in in just one glance. However, when you do this, make sure that you
are still aware that you and your fashion idol have different skin tones and
different body types. At the same time, you can just use them as inspiration
but your goal is not to copy exactly what they wear.
3. Know your body type
There are different
body types and people come in different shapes and sizes. Knowing your body
type is one step towards knowing which outfits look good on you and which ones
you should move away from.
If you have thick
thighs, would you want to wear something that is thigh-hugging to the point
that it looks like your thighs can't breathe? Of course, you wouldn't. Another
example would be if you have large arms. Wearing something that emphasizes your
arm size might make you uncomfortable especially if it is nothing you want to
be proud of.
4. Match your skin tone
Your skin tone plays
a huge role when picking your personal style. This is because some colours make
you look darker while some make you look lighter. If your aim is to look
whiter, you will avoid light colours because it makes your skin look dark.
Instead, you'd wear dark hues.
You should also apply
this rule when it comes to picking makeup. When buying beauty products, don't
hesitate to swatch them on the back of your wrist to see if it matches your
skin.
5. Style your hair
When you say style,
this doesn't mean that you have to go to the salon every single day or whenever
you have to go to an event. Styling your hair can be a simple haircut that
matches your height and build. The best way to do this is to consult your hair
stylist or hairdressers and to ask them what haircut best suits your face shape
and your build.
You can also opt to
colour your hair. When you decide to do this, you should remember that it is
still best to stick to natural hair colours and just play around with different
shades of it. The problem with colourful hair is that it tends to be a fad and
it's hard to match it with outfits.
6. Invest in staple items
Fashion repeats
itself. Just like history, the fashion trends of the past decades come back to
be the new trend of today. Although it's nice to be part of a trend and feel
like you belong with the rest of the crowd, you still want to show your
individuality through your personal style.
You can do this by
deciding to buy staple items even if they are not on trend. Besides, staple
items will never go out of fashion. Examples of these timeless pieces are
perfect-fitting jeans, a white shirt, an elegant dress watch, a black dress or
a black coat, and many more. Just having these pieces and you can already
discover a style that fits you.
7. Don't be afraid to mix
and match
Some people are
afraid to mix and match bold colours and patterns. This is because they feel
that it attracts so much attention or that it might end up over the top.
However, if you're trying to discover your personal style, you also have to go
out of your comfort zone. This is when you'll know which pieces work for you or
not.
Moreover, mixing and matching can create more outfits with a few clothes.
If you don't like spending that much, then you can recreate outfits and add a
twist to them so that they don't look like you replicated your previous
attires.
8. Be confident
When you're trying
out and exploring your own personal style, confidence in yourself and in your
body is a must. Although this tip isn't directly related to knowing your style,
it still tells you how confidence will help you bring out the best version of
you. When you are confident in yourself, you can take any outfit into style and
it will still look good on you.
At the end of the
day, you determine your personal style. You can compile photos of your
celebrity idols, you can ask recommendations for your hairstyle, you can buy a
lot of fashion pieces, but you will be the one to know which ones look good on
you. You don't have to keep up with the trends all the time. All you have to do
is to stay true to yourself and to what you want to wear and feel confident in.
