What is Mindful Snacking?
Mindful Snacking is eating with intention and attention, focusing on the present moment and savoring how the food tastes so you can truly enjoy it instead of just eating it for the sake of eating, feeling peckish, or stress.

Recently we attended The SMRter Snacker Session organized by Mondelēz International (Malaysia). It was very informative, interactive, fun, and also a self-reminder session centred on the importance of mindful snacking with the aim of empowering us to snack right, without having to choose between snacking and eating right.

The SMR-ter Snacker Session was led by the Nutrition & Strategy Communications Lead for Mondelēz AMEA, Pei Gee Chew, along with a panel of experts, namely, Dr. Satvinder Kaur, Assistant Professor, Head of Program for Nutrition with Wellness, Faculty of Applied Sciences, UCSI University and Mr Nash Idrus, dad and Key Opinion Leader, who shared his perspective from a parent’s point of view. The session was moderated by Sheahnee Iman Lee. 

Well, when I work long hours, stress, or on-the-go I tend to snack more often. After I attended the Smarter Snacker session and discussion today. I found out that I’m a Compulsive Snacker (Type B)! I snack even without realizing it, absentminded snacking during course of the day. I need to be more conscious of my snacking habits. You can also check and find out What Type of Snacker You Are?

For example, when I open a pack of biscuits with the intention to eat 1 or 2 pieces but ended up eating the whole pack. Omg! yes it happened so often, and I felt so bad about it. Have you experienced this situation before? 

During The SMRter Snacker Session, I also learned so much about mindful snacking which is eating with intention and attention, focusing on the present moment, and savouring each bite slowly. This leads to a positive relationship with food, more satisfying snacking moment, and less likely to overeat.

6 Ways How To Snack Mindfully 

1. Minimize distractions: put away all the gadget when you are snacking or eating just focus on the snack

2. Portion out your snacks: smaller portion is better so that you can control and decide should you open another pack of snack 

3. Focus on the smell and taste of the snack: focus on the snack 

4. Notice the textures: enjoy every bite and moments 

5. Chew thoroughly: eat slowly, and feel fuller

6. Finish one bite before starting the next one: savour every bite

Knowing about food ingredients and calories also make us a more mindful snacker. Thsi will help us to choose what to eat for a more satisfying snacking experience. Mindful snacking can lead to positive relationship with food, more satisfying snacking moments and being less likely to overeat.

  1. I never thought that snacking also have its type of snackers! I think I am a Compulsive Snacker too. I always said "okay just 1-2 pcs of crackers". But then I already eat all of them. Gosh my subconscious mind did that! :D

  8. Wowww so interesting! I knew about Mindful eating and being at present moment. But mindful snacking??? To think of it, it’s true that we always snack without really focusing at it. Because it’s snack!!! We eat it when we’re doing something like watching TV or movies. Good to learn about this.
