We stated our 2D1N Kerala Backwater Houseboat Tour in Alleppey, it is also known as Alappuzha, a city on the Laccadive Sea in the southern Indian state of Kerala. Is a landmark between the broad Arabian sea and a web of rivers flowing into it. It's best known for houseboat cruises along the rustic Kerala backwaters also known as “Venice of India”, a network of tranquil canals and lagoons.

We stayed overnight at one of the Lakes & Lagoons Houseboats has almost the same comforts of a good hotel including furnished bedrooms, modern toilets, cozy living rooms, a kitchen and even a balcony for angling. Parts of the curved roof of wood or plaited palm leaves open out to provide shade and allow uninterrupted views.

What To Expect on Alleppey Houseboat Tour?

Well, there are many packages ranging from super luxury, honeymoon, deluxe, and more are available on eKerala Tourism, depending on your needs and the routes. Houseboats are available at Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kottayam, Allappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Kasaragod.

Our room with air-conditioning, private bathroom & toilet

Our houseboat is the deluxe type that comes with 3 rooms with air-conditioned and private bath plus toilet attached. There is a dining area, sofa, sundeck in the front of the houseboat and a small kitchen at the back. Our houseboat was clean, equipped with the basic necessities that we need. It’s not too fancy and I like it that way because it’s classic. 

Our Local Lunch on Alleppey Houseboat 

We were served traditional Kerala lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, and breakfast on board. The lunch and dinner were very good, I like the curries and portion were generous too. Our houseboat comes with a crew of 2 staff on board with us, they were friendly and service was good. 

How Much Is Kerala Backwaters Houseboat Tour Cost? 

Well, that depends on the types of houseboats you book, how many people, your durations, your route and the season too. The price may varies from USD80 to USD300 or more so do your research and plan before you go. 

The Best Time To Visit Kerala and Alleppey Houseboat 

According to our tour guide, the best time is probably from December to January because the weather is cooler and not raining season. And it's also the peak season so you might expect to pay higher during peak season.

My Experience

Overnight in a houseboat is really a unique experience, I can imagine those days people actually staying on a houseboat and sailing from one place to another. Well, I enjoyed the slow pace and laid back life on the houseboat. Since there is no electronic entertainment like TV, radio, and the internet, we spent most of the time chatting, relaxing and enjoy the beautiful backwaters of Kerala sceneries plus the local lifestyle.

I love the sunset moments, the sound of nature and serenity. When we passed by the villages the kids were swimming and they waved. The locals are so friendly and cheerful. Plus we got the chance to stop-over and explore one of the villages and that was really cool seeing how the locals live their daily life.

What is truly magical about a houseboat ride is the breathtaking view of the untouched and otherwise inaccessible rural Kerala that it offers, while you float in a relaxed way right through it.

To really experience the Kerala Backwaters sceneries and life I would recommend you to stay overnight on the houseboat at least 1 night. Overall I enjoyed my Kerala Backwaters Alleppey Houseboat Experience. 

There are a lot more interesting things to do and experience in Kerala. So later I’m going to take to my next destinations such as Thekkady Periyar National Park, Tea Plantations in Munar, Trekking in Suryanelli, Athirappilly Waterfall, Cultural Village in Palakkad, Eco Stay in Wayanad, Nature Walk in Vythiri, Drive-in Beach in Kasaragod, Jatayu Earth Center in Kollam, Trivandrum, Kovallam and many many more.
