Usually before my trip, I will go to the Money Changer to change foreign currency to carry with and bring my credit card, which usually comes with an expensive mark-up on exchange rates and service fees when I use the card overseas. Once I have purchased the currencies, it stays locked at that rate and does not fluctuate, just like I change it at the local money change. So when I reach my travel destination, I just use the card and spend in the local currency that you have purchased – no more exchange rate or service fees. No hidden forex or cross-currency charges anymore.

If I am out of cash when I am in overseas, I can also withdraw cash from the local VISA Plus ATM but there are fees at RM10 but certain banks overseas may have a surcharge on completing the transaction. How to Sign Up?

There are 2 ways you can sign up. The first one is head over to any of Merchantrade branches, they have 85 branches all over Malaysia and get your card on the spot like what I did.

Alternative you can download the Merchantrade Money app on the Google Play Store for Android devices and the App Store for iOS devices. Register on the app or register on the website registration page and have the card delivered to you in 5 to 7 days. After that activated your multi-currency feature at one of Merchantrade’s branches.

Who can Apply for this card?

That’s simple, applicant must be at least 12 years old. Applicant below 18 years of age must be accompanied by their parent or guardian with relevant supporting documentation. Upon successful registration, the applicant will be issued with the Card instantly for non-personalized card. For personalized card with applicant’s name (with or without photo), it shall be issued within 10 business days.

The following documents are required for your sign-up: 

Malaysian applicant must produce Malaysian NRIC

Foreigner must produce either (a) Foreign Passport; (b) Malaysian Work Permit; or (c) official photo identification card issued by foreign country

Malaysian registered mobile number

Residential address in Malaysia
