Urban Water Resources Conservation & Awareness

Water is the source of life! Do you aware or not, river is actually our main source of water and it’s sad to see polluted rivers. Sometimes we waste a lot of water through inefficient washing, bathing, cooking and etc. I’m glad to know that corporates, NGOs and government agencies are working towards urban water resources conservation and heightened the awareness. Not only ensuring that water is managed sustainably but also educating the local communities as well as investing in strategic rehabilitation initiatives.

Recently, we were at Pusat Informasi and Pengairan dan Saliran to learn about what and how the Water Stewardship Agenda 2018 by SPARK Foundation through collaboration with W.A.T.E.R Project (Working Actively Through Education and Rehabilitation), government agencies and local communities in strategic projects, to protect water resources and work towards long term sustainable water management.

A little briefing about what is The W.A.T.E.R Project all about? W.A.T.E.R Project is a collaboration between SPARK Foundation and the Global Environment Centre a non-profit organisation and government agencies which aims to raise awareness on the importance of river and water conservation through community-based programmes.

I believe each of us can practice this at home or in the office, not only it helps to save water but also our water bill 

SPARK Foundation has committed to invest RM2.5 million over the next three years for Phase 3 to fund continuous education programmes and strategic initiatives along the targeted river basins of Sungei Way, Sungai Penchala and Sungai Selangor. Key initiatives at project sites include rainwater harvesting, water thimble technology, wetland construction and reforestation.

One of the Phase 3 community projects by SPARK Foundation in collaboration with Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) and Global Environment Centre is built rainwater harvesting system at Block 1, Desa Mentari in Petaling Jaya, which is located within one of its project sites, Sungai Penchala.

Educating the  local communities about Water Resources Conservation and how they can contribute towards a more sustainable environment

The system is capable of harvesting an estimate of one million litres of rainwater annually and will benefit over 1,800 residents in the area by supplying additional water supply that is suitable for general use such as cleaning, landscaping and irrigation.
