The best thing of being Malaysian is that we get to celebrate all the festivities, enjoy the holidays and the food together. Oh yes… as you know we, Malaysians love our food and here are my Hari Raya Top 5 Traditional Delicacies. Jom makan!

It the time of the year again to meet friends and family and of course enjoy Malay traditional delicacies. As you know I love spicy food and every Hari Raya I will be looking forward to my favourite dishes. Its makan time together-gether again.

Hari Raya Open House

Here are my Hari Raya Top 5 Traditional Delicacies

Rendang

1. Rendang

Oh well! What is Raya without Rending right… this one of Malaysians favourite Raya dishes and to be honest we can get rendang throughout the year in Malay restaurants or even at mamaks. I love Rendang Chicken, its chicken slow-cook with 13 herbs and spices or so called “rempah” for hours. The aromatic, spicy, rich, and savoury gravy is too irresistible, its best eat with rice or ketupat.

Lemang

2. Lemang

Lemang is a must try and also another symbol of Raya. Lemang is made of glutinous rice, coconut milk and with a bit of salt. This special dish is cooked in a hollowed bamboo stick lined with banana leaves and can take up to five hours of roasting. You also can find many setup shops along the streets selling this iconic dished during Raya. Lemang goes best with serunding or rendang or eve kuah kacang.

Lontong Sayur Lodeh

3. Lontong Sayur Lodeh

Slurpss… lontong is a heavenly soupy and creamy concoction with assorted vegetables like cabbage, carrots and chillies; glass noodles, fu chok (soya slices), toufu, tempe, and hard boiled eggs. It’s perfect for those big on appetites because Lontong is served with nasi himpit or ketupat nasi.

Serunding

4. Serunding

Serunding is meat floss, a popular delicacies or snack for Ramadan and Raya. Serunding can be prepared with meat like beef, chicken and even anchovy, prawn, and fish. Well it’s crispy and flavourful and can be eaten on its own just like any snack or sprinkle on or with other dishes. During Raya, serunding goes well with lemang, during normal days it goes well with bread or porridge too.

Dodol

5. Dodol

I love Dodol since young, it’s a sweet toffee-like or chewy Malay kuih. You can find many flavours such pandan, durian, but I love the original which is the gula Melaka (palm sugar) dark brown in color.
