If you can start
the day without caffeine;
If you can get
going without pep pills;
If you can always
be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains;
If you can resist
complaining and boring people with your troubles;
If you can eat the
same food every day and be grateful for it;
If you can
understand when your loved ones are too busy to give you any time;
If you can forgive
a friend's lack of consideration;
If you can overlook
it when those you love take it out on you when, through no fault of your own,
something goes wrong;
If you can take
criticism and blame without resentment;
If you can ignore a
friend's limited education and never correct him;
If you can resist
treating a rich friend better than a poor friend;
If you can face the
world without lies and deceit;
If you can conquer
tension without medical help;
If you can relax
without liquor;
If you can sleep
without the aid of drugs;
If you can honestly
say that deep in your heart you have no prejudice against creed or color,
religion or politics; then, my friend,
You Are Almost As Good As Your Dog'.
Indeed! If we think about what pets can teach us, a huge list of positive ‘being a human’ skills will be figured out. Having a puppy or a kitty does not only make us less lonely and depressed but also can play a big role in our personal development.
All we need to
learn the lesson is just to pay attention and try to draw a parallel between a pet’s
behavior and facts about human relationships. They’re a wonderful example of a
mindful living, how could you not notice it before?
Unfortunately, in
today’s world, unconditional love is not a common thing in human relationships.
On the contrary, the love of a pet is something completely different: they
don’t love you BECAUSE – they love you NO MATTER WHAT. Love without
judgment and conditions is the most beautiful and important thing pets can
teach us.
2. Trust without
Wavering
“If you pick up a starving dog and make him
prosperous he will not bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog
and man.” ― Mark Twain. Can you disagree
that the trust of your pet is truly boundless? Learn this devotion that your
pet shows in you, and your life will never be the same. Trust your closest
ones, trust in yourself, trust that the universe is working in your favor.
3. Live Today
Surprisingly, pets
more often savor the moment than people. They don’t worry about the future and
don’t sacrifice about the past; they live right now and carry about their
current basic needs only. Just like a dog can
find something interesting in a yard it knows inside out, learn to figure out
something special in every single day, even if it’s going to be an average day
stuffed with routine.
4. Listen to Your
Heart
Or, at least, heed
your instincts. Animals are
extremely attentive to their senses, they’ll never do something if they don’t
want to or feel like don’t need to. People do the opposite: they regularly
ignore what their inner voice is trying to say. People are too busy to stop and
listen to their hearts. But is there any real reason to rush that much and
neglect our true wishes?
5. Forgive without
Regrets
Let's admit that
we’re not always ideal owners. Sometimes, we are too lazy to get up early in
the morning and go for a walk, sometimes we work long hours and come home late
while our pets are bored and even hungry staying alone at home, sometimes we
wash them, give medicines, and do other stuff they hate. Other times, we may
speak harshly toward them or ignore them completely. However, their
offense never lasts for a very long time – thus, loyalty and forgiveness are
other amazing things pets can teach us.
6. Take
Responsibility Consciously
“You become
responsible, forever, for what you have tamed” ― Antoine de Saint-ExupĂ©ry. Especially for kids,
living with a pet gives a deep understanding of huge responsibility for their
actions. Besides, our smaller friends make us more organized and more
conscientious about our actions. The children who
regularly care of pets can associate responsibility with positive results,
eventually, it leads to more success in adult life.
7. Be Patient
Any pet requires a
lot of patience. In some sense, this experience can be a good preparation for
the future child. You’ll have to put up with the fact the fur will appear on
your perfectly clean floors with cosmic speed, the animal returning from the
walk can gallop from the front door right to the sofa with all the dirt on its
paws. Your pet will probably require breakfast at 5 am or sleep in your bed
trying to occupy more space and push you out. And in all these inevitable
situations, as well as in hundreds of others, you’ll have to keep calm, be
patient, and keep loving your little friend.
Inability to take
time to rest, celebrate the life and enjoy it is one of the most upsetting
facts about human relationships. Don’t take yourself
so seriously, let go of your inner critic and the judgments of others – and
make time to re-energize whenever you need it.
“While a dog loves to chew bones, the human
mind loves problems… Every animal has important lessons to teach us if we would
only stop, look and listen.” – Eckhart Tolle. Written by Linda
