Hey! As you know I love spicy food and Indian cuisine is in my list too. Not only I love Indian food but I love India too, the country and culture is very unique, full of its own character and identity. I have been to India a few times and I will go back again because there are still many interesting places to explore. O stayisfy my cravings for Indian food, recently we went to MTR 1924 Restaurant at Brickfields, also known as Little India. This restaurant serves authentic southern Indian vegetarian cuisine since 1924.

MTR 1924 is one of the popular restaurant in India with nearly 90-year old business and today MTR has a chain of 10 restaurants in India and has also expanded into Singapore, Dubai and Kuala Lumpur. The restaurant’s long history started back in 1920, three brothers, Parameshwara Maiya, Ganappayya Maiya and Yagnanarayana Maiya left a small, sleepy hamlet near Udupi in South Kanara in search of greener pastures.

They found employment as cooks in the homes of some prominent people of those times. In 1924, Parameshwara Maiya, with encouragement and assistance from his employer, decided to start a small restaurant on Lalbagh Fort Road in Bangalore, along with Ganappayya Maiya. And from there they grow and expend their restaurant business from generation to generations.

You must try this Rava Idly, it’s I would go there purposely for this idly. This is one of MTR 1924 signature dish. Freshly prepared, warm and fluffy Rava Idly served with the green chutney and lentil sambhar. Rava Idly is steamed semolina cake with mixture of yoghurt, coriander, cashew nuts, mustard seeds, curry leaves and other spices. During World War II, when rice was scarce, Yagnanarayana Maiya experimented with rava (a gritty, coarse type of flour from durum wheat) and invented the Rava Idly.

Bisi Held Bhath @ RM 6.50
Bisi Bele Bhath is actually a rice dish cooked with lentils, assorted vegetables, spices, nutmeg, curry leaves, tamarind pulp and served with raitha. It’s flavourful, moderate spiciness, and slightly sourish that makes it appetizing. Another one of the dish that you should try there.

The masala spiced potatoes is the one I am going after, soft, moist and fluffy cooked to perfection, wrapped in thin crispy skin and topped with green chutney… omg! I can feel India.

Benne Dosa, Daily Special

Benne Dosa, Daily Special
One unique thing about MTR 1924 is that they have daily special. On the day we were there it was this Benne Dosa. Something simple yet very authentic in taste and that’s how the locals love it. The daily specials are served from 5 pm onwards daily.

Pudi Masala
Look out for this because it’s the new menu introduced in MTR 1924 Singapore and might be coming to Kuala Lumpur soon. Pudi Masala is served and sprinkled with turmeric and chilli powder that makes the dish more flavourful. The Pudi Masala is thin, soft and flavourful.

We also tried some of their desserts such as Chandrahara, Badam Halwa and Payasam. You know I tried to cook Payasam before but the one I had in MTR 19124 is way tastier that the one I cooked at home… hahaha.

Overall I love all the dishes that we tried on that day especially the Rava Idly, Bisi Held Bhath and even their dosas. There are many more to try such as Vangi Bhath, Onion Pakoda, Bonda Soup, Benne Dosa, Tomato Bhath, Goli Bajji, Akki Roti and many more. I will go back again simply because I love their idlis and dosas.

If you crave for Southern Indian cuisine or you have guests or friends that love to try Indian Vegetarian food I would suggest you bring them there. Not just the idlis and dosas, but do try their freshly brewed filter coffee also.
