The Reasons I Love Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur is not only my home, but one of my favourite cities, always. To me it is one of the most interesting and modern cities on the planet and it definitely deserves a visit if you are deciding on somewhere to go for your next  holiday. This is my guide to just a few of things that there are to love about KL,  I hope you enjoy reading about as much as I enjoy living in this wonderful city.

It’s hidden treasures

Kuala Lumpur is not always as it seems and this can be seen more or less everywhere in the city. For example there are many great restaurants that aren’t restaurants at all, but rather food stalls, where the food is better than you can buy in any restaurant. That street stall may not look great, but it may have the best roti canai or satay that you have ever tried and you will probably never know about it. I stumbled across Withlocals recently, which is a service that matches tourists with local people to do fun things together. 

You can get in touch with real local people just like me. We know all the great places to go and see or where to get something good to eat. These are the things that guide books and websites can’t give you: local insider knowledge. Withlocals can help you to get a greater insight with a guided tour, a picnic or anything else that you could think of with authentic local people. It’s also a great opportunity to learn about other cultures and how other people in the world live, which I absolutely love.

Shopping

The Malaysian people (myself included) are absolutely shopping mad and there are so many malls in Kuala Lumpur to enjoy this pleasure. Whether it is clothes, bags, shoes or sports gear that you need, there is definitely a shop for it. There are so many huge malls, but I personally like Mid Valley, Pavilion and KLCC (right below the Petronas Towers), for their variety and great atmosphere. If shopping is what you want in Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur is definitely the place to do it.

Batu Caves 

Batu Caves

The Batu Caves are incredibly close to the city and nowhere else in the world will you find a natural wonder like this located so close to the city. The caves are landforms that have been formed through erosion in the limestone hills. At the entrance you will be greeted by a 40 metre tall statue of Murugan (a Hindu god) and over 300 steps, which lead to the caves themselves as well as providing a breathtaking view and also a breathtaking workout. 

You can even explore the cave system here and learn more about the caves and the unique rock formations and ecosystem that they are home to. If you do get the opportunity to do this you should definitely take the longer tour of the caves, especially because the cave system itself is extremely fascinating and beautiful.

The food

There is no question in my mind that Malaysian food is some of the best that you will find on the entire planet and this is no exaggeration. It is great that three stunning cuisines come together (Chinese, native Malay and Indian). I absolutely love eating a beautiful flaky roti canai with dhal or a nice Char Kway Teow (fried rice noodles). 

The possibilities are endless and you won’t be disappointed wherever you go. Definitely try Nasi Lemak too, which is the national dish of Malaysia and is rice cooked in coconut milk with spicy sambal and fried anchovies. It really is my favourite dish too!
