The Kid From The Big Apple Movie Review

Grandpa and grandma are like stars, not always seen but forever there… How does this relate to you? I lost my grandparents some years ago but I still think that they are watching and protecting me from above. I wish I can turn back the clock and spend more time with them. Watching the The Kid From The Big Apple movie brings back lots of good old memories when I was a kid and remind us about the importance family values, so much more to relate to till I can’t hold back my tears.

Imagine what will happen when the older and younger generation collided? When East and West meet, plus there are from different culture and speak different language. The Kid From The Big Apple a must watch heart-warming comedy. The whole movie is fully shot in Malaysia by our well-known director Jess Teong.

It’s a movie for all ages, as you watch the movie it somehow remind us of the little things in life that we have gone through as a kid and also adults. As for the older generation, they also find it hard to adapt with the young generation that is always on their smartphone and also stubborn. 

Sarah (Tan Qin Lin) and her mother Sophia (Jessica Hester Hsuan) 

The movie started with Sarah (Tan Qin Lin), a girl raised in New York. She was sent to Malaysia by her mother Sophia (Jessica Hester Hsuan) to stay with her conservative grandpa, Gen (Ti Lung) for a few months. While her mother, were away in China to concentrate on her fashion project.

This was Sarah’s first visit to Malaysia. It was difficult for Sarah and Gen to get along with each other initially. Sarah started as a stubborn and spoilt brad who refused to listen and respect her grandpa. As time goes by, both were able to compromise, adapt and learn from each other.

Throughout her days in Malaysia, Sarah also learned why her grandpa, Gen and mother, Sophia have not seen each other since she was born. Plus why they care so much about their cultural traditions.

The supporting cast played an important role to make the movie alive. I like Ah Bao’s character and his broken English. Plus Aunty Ming’s chatty and busy-body character sometimes resembles the auntiness that we encountered.

Overall I truly enjoyed watching this movie and will go to the cinema with my family to watch again. Be warned to bring along hankie or enough tissue because we will expect lots tears.

The Kid From The Big Apple is a must watch 2 hours heart-warming comedy that will be released in the cinemas on 10^th March 2016. A movie about family love, bonding and the ending is good. Plus it also won many awards at the Macau International Movie Festival, defeating other tough competition at the festival including Wilson Yip’s Ip Man 3 and Dante Lam’s To The Fore.

Not only that this movie also gained its recognition in the Big Apple at Hollywood movie scene. The Kid From The Big Apple is an official finalist in the 2014 Hollywood screenplay contest, and an official finalist in the New York screenplay contest.
