Experience Edo Period @ Osaka Museum of Housing and Living

A walk through the ancient streets and experienced Osaka back in 1830s (the edo period) at the Osaka Museum of Housing and Living. The re-production of Naniwa Osaka street scene and buildings with transition between day and night are simulated gave us the feeling how life was in the old times of Osaka. The museum is a complete model of the Edo-time Osaka, the only one in Japan and we can rent yukata during our visit.

Here is a little more about the Osaka Museum of Housing and Living (Kurashi no Konjakukan) containing a life sized Osaka street scene re-production from the ancient Edo time (1603-1867) to the more recent Showa Periods. The bustling atmosphere of a merchant’s household in Osaka, decorations for the Tenjin Festival, annual seasonal events and also people’s daily live activities.

There are 10 exhibition rooms on the 9^th floor started with the cabinetmaker, cosmetics shop, import store, fabric shop, bathhouse, doll shop, bookstore, meeting hall, apothecary and row of houses.

 As we walked along the exhibitions rooms we experience how people’s daily living environments during the edo period. Certain exhibition rooms are allowed to enter so we went in and took photos of the exhibit.

Overall it was really fun and a great way to experience Osaka living and culture during the olden days.

Rent Yukata for only 200 Yen

You can rent Yukata with the slipper for 30 minutes for only 200 Yen. I would advise you to rent it because it if really a good experience for you especially when you take photos in the museum. Go there early in the morning because by oon the queue to rent the Yukata will be too long. The yukata is available for female and male.

How to get there Osaka Museum of Housing and Living via public transport?

Osaka Museum of Housing and Living is located in the northeastern part of Kita-ku (ward) in Osaka. Take Tanimachi Subway or the Sakaisuji Subway or Tenjinbashisuji 6-chrome station. Use exit No. 3. About 7-minute walk from Tenma Station on the JR Loop line.
