This is my first time experiencing Nyonya Memoirs on a Live
Environmental Theatre by Hatten Group featuring the revolutionary new concept
of Melaka’s iconic Peranakan heritage. It’s unlike the normal theatre show
where we just sit and watch, it’s a 360 degrees cultural experience where we followed
the cast as they moved a sort of interactive theatre.
The Nyonya Memoirs set stretches across 600 meters on Level 3 from
Dataran Pahlawan Melaka Megamall to Terminal Pahlawan and is designed in
life-sized architectural style of old town Melaka.
The setup, concept and marketing
of Nyonya Memoirs cost about RM8million by Hatten Group to highlight the local
culture to promote Peranakan heritage and also boost Melaka’s State Tourism in
2015.

Well, I followed through the whole theatre show and certain parts
were so touching and I shed some tears. The cast were able brought us back to
their era. The Nyonya Memoirs is a fateful tale of a young couple unfolds as a
wealthy Nyonya, Bao Zhu, accepts the proposal from the love of her life, Zhang
Min a poor, common Baba.
Their engagement soon turns bitter when Bao Zhu’s powerful and
prominent family forbids the union. Divided by their social differences and
driven to the deepest depths of heartache, can the true love between Bao Zhu
and Zhang Min rise above to conquer all? It have tragic moments and sweet
ending.
Overall, for this live environmental theatre we are able to get
closer to the cast and followed them from scene to scene. Throughout the whole
story we had to stand and walk well we can also choose to sit there are stools
provided.
This is a fresh and new concept that creates an emotional connection
the cast and audiences, generating excitement and I am amaze by the huge setup. The show was performed in mandarin with Peranakan dialect and with
English subtitles on the screen nearby each scene.
