Faisal Cup, the first and only football and netball tournament of
its kind in Malaysia, is back for the eighth year. This event features 3 rounds
– Round 1 of the event commenced on 8 June 2013, Round 2 on 15 June, and Round
3 on 22 June as well as the Finals on 17th August at SMK Raja Ali, Jalan Ipoh. 2013
is a very special year for the organizers as they celebrate 15 years of
providing inspiration and hope to the many lives that have been a part of their
family.
The tournament, named after Faisal an underprivileged boy who lost his life while chasing after a football, inspired the organizers to provide a safe environment to cater to the plight of underprivileged children.
The event features 101 teams – a combination of 61 male and 13 female football teams, as well as 27 netball teams; vying for their respective trophies. A total of 434 boys and 325 girls between the ages of 10 to 16 are participating in this joyous tournament and around 1,000 people are expected to attend to cheer the children on.
This also marks the second year the Asian Football Development Project (AFDP) has come on board as supporters. The AFDP alongside the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Mah Sing Group, and Nike are providing their sponsorship and support for the tournament.
The AFDP, a non-profit youth commission founded by Prince Ali
and headquartered in Amman, Jordan, focuses its needs-based support on
strengthening football development as well as promoting social development
through football across Asia – with support from its official partner, PepsiCo.
For the many underprivileged children just like Faisal, organised
sport is a place of freedom, equality, hope, dignity and a place where they can
truly strive for more. For more information about Faisal Cup please visit
