Over 300 duty-free items part of efforts towards “Luxury Malaysia ”. Retail tourism marks a major component of Malaysia ’s tourism revenue and is expected to register 35 per cent of tourist receipts by 2020, as compared to the current 28 per cent share of total tourism revenue. The duty-free programme is a waiver of import duty on about 300 goods valued at over RM200 was implemented by the Ministry of Tourism in January 2011.

In a collaborative effort with Tourism Malaysia , tourists were also rewarded for shopping at Pavilion KL. Over 2,000 gifts were redeemed with top spending tourists recorded from China , Indonesia and Singapore . A total of RM2.4 million spend was captured with average receipt spend of close to RM1,200. Favourite shopping items were found to be timepieces, bag, shoes, accessories, pewter and leather goods.
“As part of our duty-free shopping initiative, we wanted to create more value added shopping experience for our international tourists. In our collaboration with UnionPay, the world’s largest card issuer, China tourists are able to tap into the UnionPay network which allows them greater shopping convenience, gift rewards and discounts,” Kung Suan Ai, Pavilion KL’s Director of Marketing.
In line with Malaysia target to achieve 36 million tourist arrivals and RM168bil receipts by the year 2020, aggressive effort is being put into targeting and attracting high-spending tourists who will have a direct positive impact on the country's revenue. In 2011, tourist arrivals contributed to total receipts of RM58.32 billion in revenue of which, close to 30 per cent came from shopping.
With a minimum spend of RM238, tourist can redeem a Crabtree & Evelyn gift and with RM2,388, a customised pewter gift. The UnionPay Summer Campaign at Pavilion KL is currently on-going and will end on October 15.
